Virus Reproduction

Illustration representing the multi-step process of a simplified virus reproduction cycle. The virus, an obligate intracellular parasite, uses its host cell’s equipment to reproduce its DNA and capsid protein coating.

  1. Viral DNA uses the host’s nucleotides and enzymes to replicate.
  2. Viral DNA undergoes transcription of RNA, and translation into capsid proteins, using host resources.
  3. New viral DNA and capsid proteins self-assemble, and exit the host cell.
